Self-injurious behaviors (SIB) are self-directed behaviors which can result in relevant tissue damage. These can be suicidal or non-suicidal with respect to intention. The majority of SIB begin at adolescence and sometimes cause serious injuries or death. While the prevalence of SIB is increasing every year, it is becoming a major public health problem. Repetition is also very common. There are several individual/psychiatric, familial and social risk factors for SIB including previous SIB, history of depression, history of abuse and neglect, being bullied and feeling hopeless. Non-suicidal SIB also increase the risk for suicidal behaviors. This article reviews the psychiatric assessment, treatment and prevention of SIB in adolescents.
