We conducted a school-based epidemiological study aimed to investigate icecream headache prevalence and its relation with migraine and tension-type headaches in high-school adolescents aged 14-18 years in İzmir. The study population was 2,500 students in 21 high schools. A total of 2,384 students completed the questionnaire (response rate 95.3%). The prevalence of icecream headache was 2.9%. It was significantly higher in boys than in girls (p=0.000). No statistically significant difference was found in ages between the students with or without ice-cream headache (p=0.352). Students with ice-cream headache demonstrated significant difference in gender and age (p=0.010, χ2=13.01). Ice-cream headache occurred in 6.8% of migraine and 1.6% of tension-type headache patients (p<0.05). Our study suggests that while ice-cream headache does not occur only in students with migraine it is more frequently seen in this group.
