Deep vein thrombosis is a rare complication of chickenpox infection. A nineyear- old boy developed left ileofemoral vein thrombosis two weeks after chickenpox infection. Although protein C and antithrombin III were within normal ranges, protein S was found to be lower. Heterozygous prothrombin PT G20210A mutation was also detected in addition to protein S deficiency. Rapid thrombotic vein recanalization was observed with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and heparin administration and then low molecular weight heparin was continued for one year. No thrombotic event or postphlebitic syndrome recur red during three years of follow-up. Although previous reports defined acquired protein S deficiency associated with factor V Leiden mutation, to our knowledge, this is the first report of deep vein thrombosis following chickenpox in a child with PT G20210A mutation.
