Effect of psychopathology in mothers and family functioning on suicidal intent and behavior of adolescents. Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Dergisi 2018; 61: 11-18.

Suicide in adolescence is one of the important etiological factors of mortality and morbidity. Family malfunctioning and parental psychopathology are environmental risk factors of adolescence suicide. In this study it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between suicidal ideation and behavior of 31 adolescents who committed suicide and mothers` psychopathology, and family functioning. To evaluate psychopathology of adolescents Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime (K-SADS) was applied, and Suicidal Ideation and Suicidal Behavioral Scales (SIS, SBS), were filled. Mothers filled SCL-90-R and McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD). SIS scores of adolescents were significantly higher in those whose mother had psychopathology. Communication, roles and affective responsiveness subcale scores of the FAD were significantly positively correlated with SIS scores. In conclusion, mothers` psychopathology and dysfunctional family increase an adolescent`s suicidal ideation. It is important to be careful about suicide risk during evaluating adolescents who have ineffective family functioning and whose mothers` have psychopathology and to include family in treatment process.
