Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Dergisi 2006; 49: 24-29.
In this study, the relationship between inflammation criteria and body mass index was investigated in healthy obese school children. We also evaluated an effect of obesity on renal functions. Sixty-five healthy obese children were included in this study and 10 healthy volunteer children were chosen as the control group. Body mass index (BMI), standard deviation score of body mass index (BMISD) values of all patients were calculated, and blood and urine analyses were performed. Inflammatory mediators like C-reactive protein (CRP), ceruloplasmin, leukocyte and thrombocyte counts were higher in the obese children than in the control group (p<0.05). A significant positive correlation was found between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and BMI (r=0.38, p=0.001). There was also positive correlation between the BMISD and CRP, ceruloplasmin, leukocyte count, and GFR. There was no statistical difference between the two groups in protein and microalbumin excretion in the urine. These results show that the effects of obesity on renal functions and body metabolism start at early ages. In order to prevent obesity-related complications in adulthood, it is important to take measures for preventing the development of obesity during the childhood period.
