Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Dergisi 2011; 54: 204-210.

The objective of this study was to examine the psychiatric symptoms of children and adolescents with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and their mothers. A total of 50 children and adolescents with FMF and 50 healthy controls were included in the study. The children and adolescents completed the CDI (Children’s Depression Inventory), STAI-C (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for children) and VAS (Visual Analog Scale), and their mothers completed the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R). Of the children and adolescents with FMF, 56.0% were girls and 44.0% were boys, and the mean age was 12.2± 2.9 years. There was no significant difference in CDI and STAI-1, 2 scores between those with and without FMF or according to gender and age (p>0.05). There was also no significant difference in the mean SCL-90 scores of mothers between the two groups (p>0.05). In this study, the psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents with FMF did not differ from those of healthy controls. The high school achievement of children and adolescents and psychological well-being of the mother could be a protective factor for psychiatric comorbidity among children and adolescents with FMF.
