Over the years, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis have undergone significant developments; however, it continues to be an important cause of mortality. Early diagnosis of sepsis reduces mortality and morbidity. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), one of the important immunological markers during the early phases of inflammation, is beginning to be used for early diagnosis of sepsis. In this study the level of ICAM-1 in the blood of 80 children with sepsis was determined by ELISA method and compared with an age-matched group of 20 healthy children. The level of ICAM-1 in children with sepsis was found significantly higher when compared with that of healthy children (p<0.001). In addition, the level of ICAM-1 in children with sepsis who died was statistically significantly higher than that of children with sepsis who survived (p<0.001). In conclusion, ICAM-1 may be a useful marker for diagnosis and for estimating the prognosis of sepsis. It is thought that ICAM-1 may be an early marker for estimating mortality and morbidity.
