To determine smoking habits among 297 adolescent patients and their siblings, 408 mothers, 385 fathers and 27 other relatives, a total of 1117 persons entering the Eskisehir State Hospital Pediatric Hematology Oncology outpatient clinic were questioned between August 2013 and March 2014. At least one member was a smoker in 65% of families, while the active smoking rate among adolescents was 12%. The number of cigarettes smoked per day was 9 ± 6 among mothers and 19 ± 13 among fathers. The smoking location at home was outdoors in 55% of families. There was a significant correlation between chronic disease in mothers and the smoking location (p = 0.008); their education level had a significant effect on their choice of smoking location (p = 0.025) and the number of cigarettes smoked daily (P = 0.019). No such correlations were seen among fathers (p > 0.075). In conclusion, the rate of cigarette smoking is still very high. However, the indoor smoking rate has fallen significantly, and smoking mothers are being more careful. Anahtar Kelimeler : adolesan, çocuk, ebeveyn, sigara, sigara içme.
