Abstract

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy is used to treat many types of disorders, including immune deficiencies, autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory diseases. Besides such frequently observed side effects as fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and myalgia, there may also occur other, more serious side effects: acute renal failure, paralysis, acute myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, anaphylaxis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, acute lung injury related to transfusion, pleural effusion and aseptic meningitis. We thus herein report a case in which complaints of headache and vomiting appeared after IVIG treatment. Symptoms of meningeal irritation also developed and were diagnosed as aseptic meningitis. Given the increasing scope of IVIG use, it is our intent in this paper to emphasize the necessity of awareness among physicians of its potential side effects.
