Abstract

Adrenal hemorrhage is a relatively uncommon condition in term newborns. The adrenal gland is relatively large, extremely vascular, hyperemic, and prone to vascular damage in the newborn. Birth trauma, prolonged labor, macrosomia, breech presentation, perinatal asphyxia or hypoxia, septicemia, and hemorrhagic disorder are the most common predisposing causes of adrenal hemorrhage. The right adrenal gland is the frequent site of adrenal hemorrhage. Signs vary with the degree and extent of hemorrhage. The most common clinical presentations are persistent jaundice and flank mass. Adrenal hemorrhage rarely leads to adrenal insufficiency in newborns. Here, a case of a newborn infant with adrenal insufficiency due to bilateral adrenal hemorrhage is presented.
