Abstract
In this study, we aimed to determine the frequency of serious injuryproducing accidents and related factors among children 10 years of age and younger. Data were collected by a questionnaire included items regarding the sociodemographic profiles of the children and the frequency and characteristics of injuries they suffered. The study included 1132 children. The frequency of injury-producing accidents was determined as 13.9%. The majority of the accidents occurred in homes, and 54.8% of them were due to falls. It was found that maternal age and educational background, paternal age and sequence of the child primarily affected the risk of an accident. Because an effective surveillance system is not present in our country, this type of epidemiologic study should be repeated in order to identify the risk factors for injuries and to improve primary preventive measures. Furthermore, it is recommended that parents be trained during pediatric follow-up visits on the risk factors for accidents and methods for child-proofing their homes in an effort to protect their children.
