Abstract

Infants and children can experience swallowing problems due to behavioral, developmental, or neurological conditions, respiratory problems, gastroesophageal reflux, or structural deficits such as a cleft lip or palate. Swallowing dysfunction can lead to numerous complications, such as dehydration, malnutrition, bronchospasm and airway obstruction, aspiration pneumonia, and chronic lung infections. Common signs and symptoms of swallowing problem in infants and children can range from obvious ones as projectile vomiting, coughing, and/or choking to instances of silent aspiration. The objective assessments to determine swallow function are videofluoroscopic swallow study and flexible fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. The primary aim of the swallowing dysfunction therapy is to achieve optimal safety during meals. Medical therapy, surgical procedures and rehabilitation programs are the options for reaching this target. Swallowing rehabilitation requires a multidisciplinary approach; coordination and early intervention of the involved specialists have great importance for success.
