Abstract

Labial fusion is a problem in which the labia minora are fused over the vestibule. Urinary tract infections are seen in 20-40% of these patients as obstruction of the vaginal orifice causes a stasis of urine, leading to colonization. We present the case of a child with a delayed diagnosis of labial fusion leading to recurrent urinary tract infections and subsequently vesicoureteral reflux. Additionally, we evaluated pediatricians’ approaches to the physical examination of patients with a urinary tract disease, whereby we detected that only 22.4% of physicians treating children perform a detailed genital examination. All physicians concerned with pediatric care must be reminded of the importance of a detailed genitourinary examination.
