Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency and rickets remain important for the evaluation of neonatal and infantile hypocalcemia; however, physicians sometimes experience difficulties in the differential diagnosis. Vitamin D deficiency can present with hypocalcemia and sometimes hyperphosphatemia due to the inadequate response of parathyroid hormone (PTH) to hypocalcemia during the neonatal period. Herein, a case who was admitted with seizure (hypocalcemic) at 8 days of age and diagnosed as congenital rickets is reported. Vitamin D deficiency should be considered primarily in the differential diagnosis of neonatal hypocalcemia, particularly in those areas where maternal vitamin D deficiency is common. Hypocalcemia due to congenital rickets can be prevented with adequate vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.
