Abstract

Viral respiratory tract infections are very important health problems throughout the world and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality; the burden of disease caused by these complications is considerable. Although many bacteria and fungi may cause respiratory tract infections, it is known that viral respiratory tract infections have greater role in causing disease as they are more commonly observed. In recent years, many viruses causing respiratory tract infections have been discovered. In this review, wefocus on several of these newly identified pathogens for which there are clinical data implicating a role of these viruses in respiratory tract disease, specifically human metapneumovirus, human coronaviruses (NL63 and HKU1), the human bocavirus, adenovirus (AD14), avian influenza virus, and swine influenza virus and Hendra and Nipah viruses.
