Abstract

Hyponatremia almost always reflects an excess of water relative to sodium, commonly by dilution of total body sodium secondary to increase in total body water and sometimes as a result of depletion of total body sodium in excess of concurrent body water losses. With severe and rapidly evolving hyponatremia, seizure, coma, permanent brain damage, respiratory arrest, brain stem herniation, and death may occur. Symptomatic hyponatremia in children is usually associated with severe systemic disorders. There is no report on severe hyponatremia in children associated with hypothyroidism and no clear explanation for the development of hyponatremia in hypothyroidism. Here, we report a case of central hypothyroidism in a two-year-old child associated with severe hyponatremia and status epilepticus after a traffic accident.
