Abstract

We aimed in this descriptive study to determine the knowledge levels of toy sellers and toy customers regarding toy safety. A survey was conducted on 289 customers and 41 sellers. Of the toy customers, 57.1% were women and the mean age was 38.4±14.8. Of the toys sellers, 63.4% were men and the mean age was 30.6±9.6. Of the toy customers and sellers, 6.2% and 34.1% knew of the “Regulation on Toys” respectively (p<0.05). Of the toy customers and sellers, 78.9% and 87.8% respectively, think that toys may be dangerous for children’s health and safety. Of the toy customers, 54.7% stated that they do not read the safety warnings on toys. The “Regulation on Toys”, CE mark on toys, age warning, safety warnings and necessity of operation guide were less known and warnings on labels were rarely read by consumers according to sellers (p<0.05). Age warning, name of the manufacturer and CE mark were found on 97.9% of top selling toys while operation guides, warning signs and precautions suggested to families were found on 63.9%. Researches are required for increase the knowledge level and sensitivity of toy customers and sellers regarding toy safety.
