Abstract

The etiology of dysphagia includes primary motility disorders and secondary diseases such as tracheo-esophageal fistula, achalasia, neurological disorders, connective tissue diseases and genetic disorders. A patient with dysphagia most commonly presents as feeding or respiratory difficulty and some other symptoms such as failure to thrive, lack of weight gain and nasal reflux. A female patient aged 10 months who had been diagnosed as vitamin B12 deficiency anemia was admitted to Hacettepe İhsan Doğramacı Children's Hospital because of dysphagia, poor feeding, weakness, wheezing, vomiting, pallor, weight loss and apathy. A final diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency anemia caused by the vitamin B12 depletion in the mother was established. The patient improved and all symptoms disappeared after treatment with vitamin B12 supplements. In conclusion, we suggest that vitamin B12 deficiency anemia should be considered as a rare cause of dysphagia.
