Abstract

Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is a common cause of intestinal obstruction in infancy, and is not initially considered as a cause of gastric outlet obstruction in childhood. Nonbilious vomiting is generally the initial symptom. We report a male patient who was evaluated first at the age of 28 months because of abdominal pain, vomiting and hematemesis. The first evaluation revealed partial pyloric obstruction and the patient was treated medically. However, as he did not respond to medical treatment, Billroth 1 reconstruction was needed. Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis was shown histologically. In conclusion, we suggest that hypertrophic pyloric stenosis should be considered as a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction in childhood as well as infancy.
