Abstract
Benign childhood myositis is a self-limiting disorder typically seen in schoolaged boys characterized by symmetrical involvement of distal muscles of the lower extremities causing a difficulty in walking. Acute childhood myositis associated with influenza occurs mostly in influenza B infection. Elevated creatine phosphokinase level is the most common laboratory finding. Differential diagnosis includes Guillain-Barré syndrome, muscular dystrophies, dermatomyositis, pyomyositis and growing pains. Here, we report benign acute myositis in an eight-year-old boy characterized by severe myocyte degeneration secondary to influenza type B virus infection.
