Abstract

Alternating hemiplegia (AH) of childhood is a rare disorder, and is characterized by an early onset, repeated transient attacks of hemiplegia involving either side of the body, and other paroxysmal symptoms, such as tonic fits, dystonic posturing, choreo-athetotic movements, ocular motor abnormalities, and autonomic disturbances. The diagnosis of the disease is often delayed and patients are often misdiagnosed as epilepsy with or without cerebral palsy. Two children, 24-and 42-months-old, followed as antiepileptic resistant epilepsy were diagnosed as AH. Current knowledge of the pathophysiology, clinical course, diagnosis and therapy of AH is discussed.
