Abstract
While the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) has increased in recent years, clinical and laboratory findings of patients on admission have also changed. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in clinical and laboratory data at the time of diagnosis. Thirty-two type 1 DM patients diagnosed between 1995 and 1999 (group 1) and 41 patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2004 were retrospectively evaluated. Glycosylated hemoglobin and blood glucose levels were found to be lower (p<00.5) and blood pH and bicarbonate levels were found to be higher in group 2 than in group 1 (p<0.05). Diabetic ketoacidosis incidence was 50.0% and 34.1% in group 1 and grokup 2, respectively. In conclusion, it seems that the ratio of type 1 diabetic patients presenting with severe ketoacidosis has decreased. This may lead to a significant decrease in morbidity rates in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
