Abstract

Chronic cough is a common complaint in childhood. The cough, take out which persists for more than eight weeks and makes family, doctor and patient uneasy, take out can be defined as chronic cough. Diseases such as viral infections, asthma, postnasal drip syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux, are most prevalent causes of chronic cough. Passive smoking is an important contributor to chronic cough in children. Other rarer causes that must be taken into account are cystic fibrosis, aspirated foreign body, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. All children with chronic cough must be evaluated properly. Algorithms are provided to aid the diagnostic and therapeutic process during these evaluations.
