Abstract

Neonatal diagnosis of amniotic band syndrome is frequently difficult, but the presence of fibrous bands at constriction points is helpful in the diagnosis. It is widely accepted that the primary event in the amniotic band sequence is early rupture of the amnion. The mechanism of the initial rupture is unknown. In this report, a newborn with amniotic band syndrome, which included constriction rings of the left fourth finger and head, partial syndactyly of the left first and second thumbs, and amputated left third thumb, is presented. Early amniotic rupture sequence was present in this case and may have acted as a contributing factor.
