Abstract

Recent improvements in mast cell (MC) growth and maintenance in vitro have increased the research efforts. Mast cell maturation, movement across tissues, interactions with surrounding cells and pathogens, and their crucial role in the immune system are better understood. The presence of MC in tumor tissues and their potential role in the disease process in hematology-oncology and their ability to act as an immune effector cells with their cytotoxicity in immunology seem to have opened a new era in MC research. We are currently testing in our laboratory the hypothesis that MC can play a role in the control of the disease process in aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative disorders originating from hematopoietic stem cell through immune modulation.
