Abstract

Candida spp. have become one of the most common pathogens in the setting of neonatal intensive care. Numerous potential predisposing factors for infants have been well described in association with development of invasive fungal infections. The incidence of central nervous system involvement in infants is difficult to ascertain. All infants with candidemia should undergo cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Despite absence of a positive CSF culture in the newborn, there must always be a suspicious of candidal meningitis based on central nervous system abnormalities similar to those encountered in bacterial meningitis. The treatment choice and duration differ in those infants in whom a diagnosis of meningitis is made.
