Abstract
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has been introduced as a solution for male infertility. However, it is not exactly known whether the infants conceived with use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection have a higher risk of birth defects than infants conceived naturally. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of congenital malformations in infants conceived with use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) versus by and natural conception. We assessed the incidence of birth defects in 4,551 infants. Eleven of 204 twin infants conceived with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (5.4%) had a birth defect, as compared to 1 of 140 naturally conceived twin infants (0.7%). The incidence of congenital malformations in the ICSI single group was 5.7% (6 of 104 single infants), while it was 3,4% (141 of 4103 single infants) in the natural conception group. In conclusion, this study showed that twin infants conceived with use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection have higher risk of congenital birth defect than naturally conceived infants.
