Abstract
Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HO) is a syndrome characterized by clubbing of the fingers and toes, periosteal reaction and arthritis. It is rarely seen in childhood. There are a few reports in the literature of pediatric patients biliary atresia who developed HO. It has been suggested that pulmonary arteriovenous shunting plays an important role in the pathogenesis. Steroid and nonsteroid antiinflammatory therapy can be helpful in symptomatic patients. Here, we present a girl patient diagnosed as biliary atresia who developed HO in follow-up. We want to emphasize that children with chronic liver disease who present with finger clubbing or soft tissue hypertophy of the fingers should be a warning for hepatic hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HHO). Furthermore, HHO should be considered in differential diagnosis in the cases of arthritis and arthralgia.
