Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the need of youth and their parents concerning counseling about adolescent health issues. The study was a cross-sectional descriptive study and was conducted at Hacettepe University İhsan Doğramacı Children’s Hospital Department of Adolescent Medicine between February 23 and March 12, 2023. The study population included 279 adolescents between the ages of 10-18 and 123 mothers and 19 fathers with adolescents in this age range. A questionnaire created by the researchers was applied to determine the areas in which the participants most wanted counseling on adolescent health issues. Fifteen topics related to adolescent health were given and their requests for counseling were asked on a 5-point likert scale, and they were asked to determine the 3 topics they would like to receive counseling most among this list. The mean age of the adolescents participating in the study was found to be 16.6 years. It was observed that the majority of the participants marked each topic as ‘I want it very much’ or ‘I want it’. The subjects that adolescents most wanted to learn about were ‘Exam related anxiety’, ‘Depression, suicide and self-harm’ and ‘Sleep hygiene’. Mothers wanted the most information on ‘Exam related anxiety’, ‘protection from screen addiction’, and ‘physical development’, while fathers wanted the most information on ‘Exam related anxiety’, ‘physical development’ and ‘Substance use’. The most important result of this study is the determination of the willingness of both adolescents and families to receive counseling on issues related to adolescent health. Especially on issues such as exam related anxiety and screen addiction, counseling services for adolescents and families should be increased. Therefore, in order to provide counseling on these issues, all healthcare professionals who take care of adolescents should have sufficient knowledge and necessary skills about the unique development of adolescents.
