Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of a child by Elisha (appointed as Elijah’s successor) is well described in the Old Testesmant which is the earliest report of resuscitation in history. Jesus performed many miracles in healing the people as described in the Gospel and recognized in the Koran. He healed people off all ages, including children. He healed people with epilepsy and he even raised the dead. Muhammad, however, in his own words, never performed a miracle, claiming only “The Koran” itself as his standing miracle. His comments on medicine basically reflect his contemporary knowledge and the way of Islam. The majority of Mohammed’s sayings in the area of medicine and health led to the development of an entire discipline known as al-Tibb al-Nabawi (medicine of the Prophet). Imam Bukhari, the most authentic collector of prophetic sayings, narrates 129 hadiths directly related to medicine and devotes two books to medicine and patients. Prophetic statements on pediatrics are quite interesting, because some are still valuable in modern pediatrics, such as lowering body temperature with water in a febrile patient, inhalation of dried roots of Cichorium intybus (a prebiotic) in tonsillary hypertropy and tonsillitis, and honey syrup (as an oral rehydration fluid) in diarrheal diseases.
