Abstract
We aimed in this study to describe the determination of wounds and diseases and their treatment methods according to the medical knowledge of the era as contained in the Dede Korkut stories, from the perspective of the history of medicine. Muharrem Ergin’s critical texts titled Dede Korkut Kitabı-1 (Dede Korkut Book-1) and Dede Korkut Kitabı (Dede Korkut’s Book), the book containing the text translated into contemporary Turkish; the book titled Dede Korkut Oğuznameleri containing the texts of Dresden; and Vatican copies of Dede Korkut stories re-transliterated and published by Tezcan and Boeschoten were examined. Facsimiles of Dresden and Vatican copies of stories in Ergin’s Dede Korkut Kitabı-1 were also compared to other studies. Some medical situations were described in the story of Bugach Khan, son of Dirse Han; the story of the plunder of Salur Kazan’s house; the story of Bamsi Beyrek, son of Kam Pure; the story of the captivity of Uruz Bey, son of Kazan Bey, and of Kanturali, son of Kanli Koca; the story of Emren, son of Begil; and the story of the death of Beyrek. This study revealed that the medical explanations and applications among the Oghuz tribes emphasized in the Dede Korkut stories, which are important examples of the epic story type of Turkish literature relating the lives of the Oghuz, reflected either religious or materialistic medical understanding.
