Abstract

The aims of this cross-sectional study were to measure the sleep quality of students in a vocational high school and the influencing factors. The sleep quality of 254 students in the lOth class and 218 students in the llth class was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a self-rated questionnaire that assesses sleep quality and disturbances över a one-month period. Sleep hygiene index was measured using factors including room conditions, activities, and food and drink consumption half an hour before going to bed. The students were disturbed by noise (59.1%), lighting (65.9%), ventilation (66.9%), heating (70.1%), and physical conditions (61.4%) of their rooms. The students who smoked had higher PSQI scores when compared to nonsmokers (p<0.05). The sleep quality was poor in students who stated that they had bad relationships with people (p<0.001). The sleep quality was also poor in those who had divided families (odds ratio [OR] =3.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.293-8.005), who were current or ex-smokers (OR=3.0, 95% CI=1.706-5.233), who were experiencing emotional domestic violence (OR=3.0, 95% CI= 1.202-7.570), who had bad relationships with their mother (OR=2.5, 95% CI= 1.129-5.594) and father (OR=2.7, 95% CI= 1.570-4.798), when the sleep duration was <5 hours (OR=8.2, 95% 0=2.355-28.363), and when the duration needed to fail asleep was more than 30 minutes (OR=8.0, 95% CI=3.636-17.633). Sleep quality was affected by the student's relationships with their mother and father, smoking and sleep duration. Youth should be informed regarding sleep hygiene. Psychosocial counselling should be given to the youth with poor sleep quality.
